Who we are and what this document covers

The Zenith Sky app is operated by Danolab s.r.o. ("we"). We are the controller of the data we process in connection with the app. You will find our contact details in the last section.

This document explains what data the app uses, who receives it, why, and how you can control it. It is written to match what the app actually does.

Summary

Zenith Sky calculates satellite passes on your device. We do not send your location anywhere. There are no user accounts and we do not sell data.

The app does talk to a few services: CelesTrak (orbital data), Google Firebase (statistics, crash reports, configuration), Google AdMob (ads in the free version), and, for the subscription, RevenueCat and Google Play or the App Store. Details are below.

Location

Your location is used for one thing only: working out when satellites pass over your spot. The calculation happens entirely on your device. The app does not send your location anywhere, does not store it on any server and does not give it to third parties.

The app asks only for approximate location, and only while you are using it. It does not use precise location or location in the background. If you prefer not to grant permission, pick a city from the list built into the app. That needs no search or outside service.

Note: Google's advertising SDK may estimate your approximate location from your connection's IP address. See the section on ads.

Orbital data (CelesTrak)

To calculate passes, the app downloads public satellite orbital data from the CelesTrak server (celestrak.org). The request names only a satellite or a group of satellites. It contains no location and no identifier.

As with any internet request, the CelesTrak server sees the IP address of your connection. The app does not link it to you, and we have no access to that server.

Anonymous statistics (Firebase Analytics)

To learn which features are used, the app can send anonymous statistics through Google Firebase Analytics. Only events from a fixed list are sent, for example choosing a pass, setting a reminder, opening the Zenith Sky+ offer, changing a filter or viewing a screen. Values come from closed sets (for example a satellite from the list or a duration range).

We never send location, city, time zone or exact pass times. The only properties attached are the app language and whether you have Zenith Sky+.

Firebase uses a random app-installation identifier and ordinary technical information about the device and the app. According to Google's documentation it may also derive a rough area, such as country or region, from the IP address.

Statistics run only when the toggle in Settings is on and your consent allows it. Where the law requires consent (for example in the EU), the app asks for it with a form and sends no statistics without it. Where consent is not required, only the toggle in Settings controls statistics.

Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics)

When the app crashes, a technical report can be sent through Google Firebase Crashlytics. It contains information about the error, the device and OS version, the app version and a Crashlytics installation identifier.

A few app attributes are attached too: the language, whether you have Zenith Sky+, the location mode (GPS or city) and a rough indicator of how old the orbital data is. Coordinates, city name and time zone never end up in reports. Numbers that could be mistaken for coordinates are stripped from error messages.

Crash reports are on by default and are turned off with the same toggle as statistics: Settings → "Anonymous statistics and crash reports".

App configuration (Firebase Remote Config)

The app downloads small settings from Firebase Remote Config, such as the rules for showing ads or which features are enabled. Google receives a technical request for this: the IP address and an installation identifier. No information about you or your location is sent.

Fetching the configuration cannot be turned off because the app relies on it. Without internet, the app uses built-in default values.

Ads (Google AdMob and the UMP consent form)

The free version of Zenith Sky shows ads through Google AdMob. The ad SDK may process your device's advertising identifier, IP address, device and app information, and data about ad impressions and clicks.

Important: the app does not give the ad SDK your GPS location, but the SDK may estimate the approximate location of the device from its IP address and use it to choose ads. That is not GPS location, but the ad SDK may know roughly where you are.

Consent for ads is handled by a Google form (UMP), shown wherever the law requires it. Personalised ads are shown only with your consent. If you do not consent, you get non-personalised ads. On iOS the app asks for tracking permission (App Tracking Transparency) before ads; if you decline, ads are not personalised.

Zenith Sky+ has no ads. For Zenith Sky+ users the ad SDK is not initialised at all and no consent form is shown.

Zenith Sky+ and payments (RevenueCat, Google Play, App Store)

The Zenith Sky+ subscription is bought through Google Play or the App Store. Payment details (card number and the like) are handled by the store alone. The app never sees or stores them.

The purchase status is verified by RevenueCat. It receives a random anonymous user ID, purchase and subscription status, device information and the IP address. We do not send it your name or e-mail.

Notifications and data on your device

Pass reminders are scheduled locally on your device. We do not use a push server and do not collect a device token for notifications.

Settings, the chosen city, the last known location, reminders and cached orbital data are stored only on your device (in the app storage). We do not send them anywhere from there. Uninstalling the app removes them.

Accounts, selling data and children

Zenith Sky has no user accounts and no sign-in. We do not sell personal data.

The app is not intended for children and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you think a child has given us data, contact us and we will help sort it out.

Legal bases for processing

Under the GDPR we process data on these bases (simplified):

  • Consent: statistics (Analytics) where consent is requested, and ad personalisation. You can withdraw consent at any time.
  • Legitimate interest: crash reports (so we can fix crashes and keep the app stable), downloading orbital data from CelesTrak and loading configuration. We take care that this does not create unnecessary data, and you can object to it.
  • Performance of a contract: processing the purchase and verifying the Zenith Sky+ subscription.

How long data is kept

We keep no personal data on servers of our own. Data received by Google (Firebase, AdMob), RevenueCat and CelesTrak is kept by those providers under their own rules and retention periods. The most current ones are in their privacy policies.

Data stored on your device is deleted when you uninstall the app. You can also clear it in system settings (Clear app data).

Your rights and how to use them

You have the right to access your data, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict processing, to data portability, to object, and to withdraw consent. You may also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, for example the data protection authority in your country.

What you can do directly in the app:

  • Turn off statistics and crash reports: Settings → Privacy → "Anonymous statistics and crash reports".
  • Change your ad consent: Settings → Ads → "Ad privacy". This opens the consent form and is shown wherever the law requires it.
  • On iOS, change the tracking permission in system settings; on Android, reset or delete the advertising ID in system settings.
  • Uninstall the app, which deletes all data stored on your device.

Data outside the EU

Google and RevenueCat may process data outside the EU and EEA, for example in the United States. They rely on safeguards such as adequacy decisions or the EU standard contractual clauses. Details are set out in their own policies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy, for example when the app or our providers change. The current version is always available in the app, with its version and effective date at the top. For a significant change we will tell you in the app.
